Serafina Osteria e Enoteca, Eastlake, Seattle, WA
Serafina opened its doors in 1991 as an intimate neighborhood restaurant located along Eastlake between the University and Downtown. Its ochre walls, reminiscent of the Tuscan landscape, its intimate, sultry atmosphere, and its authentic Italian cuisine make it a favorite with diners from around the Puget Sound and beyond. Serafina’s philosophy is simple: Offer the freshest, highest quality ingredients, present the food in an honest and inviting way, and provide the casual warmth and soothing ambiance that echoes the welcoming embrace of an Italian home.
The ritual of coming together sharing wine and food with family and friends is the central motif in our lives. Italian food has an immediacy, honesty, and warmth; it possesses the spirit of a grandmother’s wisdom and love. Italian food isn’t about trailblazing alchemy or edible high fashion; Italian food is about staying connected—to each other, to the past, to the earth.
Our menu recreates many of the dishes that owner Susan Kaufman has enjoyed in friends’ homes throughout Italy. It is our hope that your dining experience at Serafina will leave you feeling transported to the sublime Italian countryside, and completely taken care of by our sincere, professional staff.

Susan Kaufman, long-time Seattle resident, business and community owner, passed away early morning on July 22nd, 2016. Susan was born in December 1951, in Brooklyn, New York. A natural entrepreneur, she started her first business at 16, selling her handmade purses on Fifth Avenue to Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, and eventually to cast members of Hair. Her love affair with cooking, especially Italian cuisine, blossomed in her early 20s.
In 1977, Susan’s adventurous spirit took her to Juneau, Alaska, where she started with a food cart, then opened three restaurants and managed one during her residence there.
In 1991, she moved to the Eastlake neighborhood of Seattle and opened Serafina, which was an immediate success. Now in its 25th year, Serafina has consistently received numerous awards and is now considered a Seattle institution. In 2009, she opened Serafina’s sister restaurant Cicchetti, providing another special environment for diners. A year later, she received the prestigious Nellie Cashman Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Award for the creation and management of her outstanding restaurants, as well as for her contribution to the Eastlake community.
Susan’s passion for travel translated into another of her gifts, photography. Many of her stunning photos have been exhibited, and some gracing the walls of Serafina and Cicchetti.
Susan was a strong proponent of the local and sustainable food movement, and she deeply valued the creation of community.
She infused her personal sense of style, sultriness, passion, love of food, community, and people into everything and everyone she touched.
The culture and environment created by Susan in the early days of Serafina is still alive and well on her special corner of Eastlake. She approached each service and every guest as if they were entering her house for an evening around the dinner table. This is something that her staff will happily carry on each and every day to help us all keep the love that Susan exuded in our hearts.
Running her restaurants combined everything Susan loved: food, wine, building her community, taking care of people, and indulging her creativity. Susan leaves behind her 19-year-old daughter, Isabella, and a multitude of people, both locally and across the globe, who called her friend, cousin, and Mom. Susan lived true to the Italian idiom tradition of bringing people together to share food and wine with family and friends.
